Fall is almost here! Whenever I hear people talking about fall foliage in Minnesota, I always hear them talking about going up north. In all fairness, I used to think this was the only spot to go to see the beautiful fall colors. Now, I know better. Here are five stunning spots to admire the beauty of fall…right in Mankato, Minnesota. You can see the beauty without battling the crowds up north, paying an arm and a leg to book a hotel, and driving way further than the hour and a half it takes to get to Mankato. You’re welcome…enjoy!
- Look-out Point in North Mankato- Who knew such a simple spot next to the side of the road could provide so much beauty? It seriously is just off the road, free, and has a beautiful view of the river, bluffs, and many towns in the distance.
- Bluff Park in North Mankato- This is one of our absolute favorites. We hike it every season and we have yet to ever be disappointed. It’s stunning in all seasons and weather. Tucked away in the middle of a neighborhood, you would have no idea the beauty this path holds. Starting off the hike, you walk through a beautiful forest setting. In the fall, leaves fall endlessly around you and you can hear the crisp sound of your steps. After a short distance, the path opens up to a wide open prairie with a circular path. On this path, you can enjoy the sun shining down on you while being surrounded by a circle of trees. At one point, there is an overlook that shows you the stunning bluffs all around Mankato and Hinniker Pond below you. My favorite part about this trail…it’s fully accessible for all. Anyone can enjoy this beauty, as the path is completely paved and mostly flat. There are benches throughout the hike and even a picnic table in a gazebo. It’s also, a fairly short hike…so short that all three of our kids usually can walk the whole thing with minimal help…and complaining. You won’t want to miss this gem!
- Minneopa State Park- Yes, this is the state park with the bison and the gorgeous waterfall. Did you know this park also, has a stunning overlook by the campsites that will take your breath away? Another fairly short hike will lead you to a bench and an opening in the trees looking down on some water and bluffs. So, next time you stop here…drive through the bison and walk to the waterfall, but then also, make a stop at this overlook. This spot is free if you have a state parks pass.
- Red Jacket Trail- This is another hike on our list every fall. It could also, be a bike ride through the beautiful colors. Take a hike in the woods here which leads to a large bridge that gives you some stunning fall foliage views. Our kids also, like to hike down towards the water and look up at the bridge and the pretty views. Another definite visit!
- Williams Nature Center- Last, but not least is the Williams Nature Center. Located right off the road before Minneopa, Williams Nature Center has some breath-taking views of the bluffs and trees. This is a free stop too. Our kids enjoyed the deck overlooks and how far it allowed them to see.

So, this year, save some time, money, and headaches from the crowds and visit Mankato for your fall foliage needs. Depending on the weather, stop and get yourself a coffee at Neutral Groundz in North Mankato, bakery items from Wooden Spoon, or some ice cream from Mom and Pops. Then, cherish the hiking and the views!
