We had heard about this location from some friends and decided to check it out. It was definitely worth it! Growing up, I always loved one particular small family-owned bowling alley. It always felt more comfortable and cozy to bowl at instead of the large bowling alleys. Since bowling alleys seem to be fading away in the last few years, I was pleasantly surprised to see such a wonderful hidden gem in a small town in southern Minnesota. Springfield Lanes and the Garage restaurant are located in Springfield.

One thing to know before you visit is that google is not accurate in their hours of this location. Always make sure to call ahead to see when they are open. We did not do this and were shocked to find that the bowling alley didn’t open for a few hours from the time we came in. Luckily, the Garage was open. So, we decided to get a few appetizers and ice cream for the kids. While we waited for our food, the kids were able to explore the many car details located throughout the restaurant. Even though our family isn’t huge into cars, the kids loved seeing all of the small details around. When we came into the Garage, a line of people came after us. So, we were pleasantly surprised when the food came out so quickly. The appetizer plate was absolutely delicious. Ice cream had flavor bursts in it and each kid got to pick a different flavor. They loved the ice cream! Prices were very reasonable and everyone finished with a full belly. Later, when we were talking to the owner, we discovered they are known for their pizza. Many others around us had ordered pizza while we were there. Again, the pizza came out quickly and looked delectable.

At this point, we had thought we would need to kill some time before bowling, so were planning what to do. Shockingly, the owner came out to us and told us he could open early for us since it wasn’t too busy now. This was a true representation of the type of business it is. They are all about their customers and the experience. Walking into the bowling alley, we were floored by all the details in the decorating. I immediately felt that cozy feeling I used to get at the family-owned bowling alley I went to as a kid. One unique aspect of this bowling alley is that shoe rental is free! When you come to bowl, you just pay per game. While getting our shoes on, the owner was quick to set up the bumpers and give us a ramp for our middle child to make the bowling experience enjoyable for everyone.

Before this day, our kids had never bowled at an actual bowling alley. The joy on their faces as they learned and improved throughout the games was priceless. During our time bowling, the atmosphere for a family was perfect. Music lightly played, no time limit was present, so we could enjoy and not rush, everything was very clean, and the owner was in and out checking on us to ensure things were going well. Food and drinks could be ordered and enjoyed in the bowling alley. We were able to play two full games at the cheap price of $4.50 per game per person. Remember, shoe rental is free, so you are only paying for the cost of the game.

After we finished playing and paid, we were able to talk to the owner. What a personable guy! He took the time to tell us about the history of Springfield Lanes, let our kids participate in the conversation, and told us about new things coming up for the bowling alley. It sounds like exciting additions in the future will provide more to the experience of The Garage and Springfield Lanes.

Overall, this is a hidden gem, especially as family-owned bowling alleys, become fewer and fewer. We all enjoyed the atmosphere, the decorations, the bowling, and the food. The owner takes the time to talk, get to know you, and share his thoughts. Pick a date to check this spot out, your whole family will love it!

Until my next adventure,
Allie
