When I lived in the Twin Cities, I thought there was only one Children’s Museum in the state. I had no idea there were several others and I really had NO idea that there was a complete gem close by in Mankato. Words can’t fully describe all the wonderful parts of this museum and how many memories my family has made here. My top three reasons for loving this museum are: it’s not too big or overwhelming for small kids, the exhibits portray southern Minnesota and teach kids all about the land down here, and it’s not crazy busy. The museum has several of the most loved parts of the Children’s Museum in St. Paul on a smaller scale. Some exhibits that are consistently there are: a restaurant along with crops to pick yourself, a quarry with a sand area, a tree house climbing area, a painting area, a farm animal play area, a stage for make believe play, and a wood-working area. There is also, an area for three years old and under which provides a variety of sensory/play experiences and includes some quieter areas for nursing or kids that are overstimulated. Rotating exhibits include a multitude of different exhibits, but some of our favorites are a lego building area, a log cabin, building areas, a construction exhibit, and a farm animal area where you can practice taking care of cows. Another favorite part for my kids includes an outdoor play space, complete with a mud kitchen, building areas, climbing areas, water play, and a beautiful butterfly house. Some years, they have had real farm animals.
Staff is extremely kind here and always going the extra mile to ensure kids are having fun. If you would like to bring a picnic, there are tables, both inside and outside, for you to enjoy your food away from the exhibits. There are also, a few snacks for sale in case you forget a snack and your child gets hungry. Over the years, we have also, had the opportunity to participate in a plethora of events the museum has put on. They have ranged from baby play times to performers to animal visits (such as reindeer) to STEAM times. We have never been disappointed. My kids beg to go here all the time and I have no doubt yours will be the same! Enjoy!
